Your guide to Bled

Your guide to Bled tickets

Few places in Europe carry quite the visual weight of Bled. The glacial lake, ringed by the Julian Alps and presided over by a medieval castle perched on a sheer cliff face, has drawn travellers since the Habsburg aristocracy discovered its thermal springs in the nineteenth century. It sits in the Upper Carniola region of north-western Slovenia, close to the Austrian and Italian borders, and that geographical position gives it a character that is Alpine in its bones but distinctly Central European in its rhythms and architecture.

The lake itself is the organising fact of the town. Everything orients around its four-kilometre shoreline, from the promenade hotels that date to the spa era to the rowing boats that ferry visitors across to the island church of the Assumption of Mary, the only natural island in Slovenia. The tradition of ringing the church bell and making a wish is centuries old, and the wooden pletna boats used to reach the island are a craft passed down through specific local families under a system that has remained largely unchanged for generations. The clifftop castle, Blejski Grad, dates in its earliest form to the eleventh century and offers a view across the lake and towards the Karavanke mountain range that explains, without any further argument, why this corner of Slovenia has been continuously inhabited and celebrated for so long.
