Few cities in Australia carry the geographical weight that Cairns does. Sitting at the edge of the Coral Sea in Far North Queensland, it occupies a narrow coastal strip between two of the planet's most significant natural systems: the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system on Earth, and the Wet Tropics rainforest, which stretches north through the Daintree and beyond Cape Tribulation.
