Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the climb and time at the top. There are 551 steps total, or you can take an elevator for the first 231 steps and climb the remaining 320. The final section is narrow and spiralling. The views over Rome are some of the best in the city.
The Vatican Grottoes (upper tombs) are accessible for free after visiting the Basilica, through a one-way exit route. The Scavi (deeper excavations with St Peter's tomb) require a separate guided tour booked directly through the Vatican, often months in advance.
