Overview
The Louvre is the largest art museum in the world by gallery space (72,735 square metres) and the most visited (8.9 million visitors in 2023). The collection spans 9,000 years from ancient Mesopotamia to 19th-century France. The three most famous works are the Mona Lisa (Leonardo da Vinci), the Venus de Milo (ancient Greek) and the Winged Victory of Samothrace (Hellenistic). Skip-the-line tickets bypass the general queue at the Pyramid entrance.
Guided tours cover the highlights in 2 to 3 hours, following an optimised route through the Denon, Sully and Richelieu wings. Self-guided visits need 3 to 4 hours minimum. The Louvre is closed on Tuesdays. Late-night opening on Fridays (until 9:45pm) is the quietest time to visit. Audio guides are available for rent inside.
FAQ
Quick answers on booking, access and what to expect.
A guided highlights tour takes 2 to 3 hours. A self-guided visit covering the main works needs 3 to 4 hours. To see everything would take weeks. Most visitors focus on the Denon wing (Mona Lisa, Italian and French painting).
Friday evenings (6pm to 9:45pm) are the quietest. Wednesday and Friday mornings at opening (9am) are next best. Avoid weekends and Tuesday (closed, so Wednesday absorbs the overflow). The Mona Lisa room is always busy.
Yes for first-time visitors. The museum is enormous and disorienting. A guide follows an optimised route, avoids dead ends, and explains the context behind 15 to 20 key works in 2 to 3 hours. Without a guide, many visitors spend the time navigating rather than looking.
