Jouw gids voor Pompeii
Few places on earth carry the weight of Pompeii. Buried beneath volcanic ash and pumice when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the city was effectively sealed in time, preserving streets, frescoes, bakeries, and the plaster casts of its inhabitants in a state that no other ancient site can match. What visitors encounter today is not a ruin in the conventional sense but a Roman town that simply stopped, and that peculiar completeness is what draws well over three million people a year to this corner of Campania.
The archaeological park itself sprawls across roughly 44 hectares, and the scale surprises almost everyone on a first visit. The Forum, the civic and religious centre of ancient Pompeii, gives an immediate sense of the city's ambition: the Temple of Jupiter at its northern end frames Vesuvius in the background with an irony that never quite loses its force. From there, the Via dell'Abbondanza runs eastward past thermopolia, the Roman equivalent of street-food counters, past the Stabian Baths, and toward the amphitheatre, one of the oldest surviving stone amphitheatres in the Roman world. The House of the Faun, with its celebrated mosaic floor depicting the Battle of Issus, and the Villa of the Mysteries, just outside the main city walls, represent the domestic and ceremonial life of a prosperous Roman town at its height.
