Jouw gids voor Macau
Few places compress so much contradiction into so small a space as Macau. A peninsula and two islands joined to the Chinese mainland by a narrow strip of land, it spent more than four centuries as a Portuguese colony before returning to Chinese sovereignty in 1999, and the layering of those two worlds is visible in almost every street. Baroque church facades rise beside incense-wreathed temples. Pastel-coloured colonial buildings share the same block as towers of glass and steel. The food alone tells the story: Macanese cuisine, a genuine hybrid born of Portuguese, Chinese, African, and South Asian influences, is found nowhere else on earth in quite the same form.
The historic centre is where that layering is most legible. The ruins of St Paul's, the roofless seventeenth-century facade that has become the city's most reproduced image, stand at the top of a long staircase flanked by souvenir stalls and egg-roll shops. A short walk in any direction brings you to the Senado Square, with its wave-patterned Portuguese mosaic paving, or to the A-Ma Temple at the southern tip of the peninsula, dedicated to the sea goddess whose name the city itself is said to carry. The entire historic centre was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, recognising a concentration of monuments that is genuinely unusual for a city of this size.
