Airport options

Which New York airport to fly into

Compare fares via Skyscanner in the search above. The blurbs below cover transfer time and which carriers cluster at each option, so you can match the airport to your trip.

  • New York JFKJFK

The main long-haul gateway. AirTrain to Jamaica then LIRR to Penn Station in 35 minutes, or the subway via the AirTrain link (cheaper, slower).

  • Newark LibertyEWR

Often the cheapest long-haul option from Europe and a good alternative when JFK is full. NJ Transit train to Penn Station in 30 minutes.

  • LaGuardiaLGA

Domestic-only, but the closest to Manhattan. Recent rebuild fixed the dated terminals. Best for connecting US flights.

When to fly to New York

April to June and September to early November are the most reliable windows. July and August are hot and humid. December into early January is peak holiday season — Rockefeller Center tree, the Macy's parade, ice skating in Central Park.

Plan ahead: Broadway weekend evening shows want 1 to 2 weeks of lead time; Statue of Liberty crown access sells out 4 to 8 weeks ahead. The Empire State Building, Top of the Rock and Edge sunset slots all sell 5 to 10 days ahead in summer.
