London GatwickLGW
Strong on European low-cost carriers and a major secondary long-haul hub. Gatwick Express to Victoria in 30 minutes; Thameslink to Farringdon and King's Cross.
London StanstedSTN
Ryanair and easyJet's London base. Stansted Express to Liverpool Street in 47 minutes. Cheapest fares but the longest transfer.
London LutonLTN
easyJet, Wizz Air and Ryanair short-haul. DART shuttle to Luton Airport Parkway, then Thameslink straight into central London.
London CityLCY
Compact business airport in Docklands. DLR to Bank in 22 minutes. Limited routes but the closest airport to the City and Canary Wharf.
London SouthendSEN
Smallest of the six, mostly Ryanair. Direct trains to Stratford and Liverpool Street in 53 minutes. Lowest fares for the value-conscious traveller.
Best time to visit
London is a year-round city. May to September has the longest daylight and the outdoor festivals (Wimbledon, Notting Hill Carnival, the Proms). November to February is quieter and cheaper but expect rain. Avoid the school holidays (late July to August, Christmas week, Easter) if you want lower hotel prices.
Plan ahead: Book theatre tickets 6 to 8 weeks ahead for weekend evening shows; the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and the Buckingham Palace State Rooms (August to September only) sell out their best slots 2 to 4 weeks ahead in summer.
