Your guide to Lindos
Few places in the Aegean compress so much history, geology, and sheer visual drama into so small a space as Lindos. Perched on the eastern coast of Rhodes, the village climbs a steep limestone promontory crowned by one of the most photographed ancient sites in the Dodecanese: the Acropolis of Lindos, where Doric colonnades rise against a sky that seems permanently bleached to a pale, brilliant blue. The site was already a place of worship and civic pride in the ninth century BC, and the Knights of St John later reinforced its walls during their long tenure over Rhodes, layering medieval stonework onto classical foundations in a way that makes the whole outcrop feel like a compressed archive of Mediterranean ambition.
The village below the acropolis is a study in contrasts. Whitewashed cubic houses, many of them decorated inside with the distinctive Lindian pottery that has been produced here for centuries, line lanes too narrow for cars. Donkeys still carry visitors up the steeper paths toward the entrance of the acropolis, a practical arrangement that has remained unchanged for generations and gives the ascent an unhurried, almost anachronistic quality. The captains' houses, built by prosperous sea merchants in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, are scattered through the upper village, their carved stone facades hinting at the considerable wealth that passed through Lindos when it was a significant maritime centre.
