Perak ガイド
Perak occupies a long stretch of peninsular Malaysia's western interior, running from the flat coastal plains that fringe the Strait of Malacca up into the limestone karst highlands that define so much of the state's character. It is the second-largest state in peninsular Malaysia, and its name, meaning silver in Malay, is thought to derive from the tin deposits that once made this territory one of the most contested and prosperous corners of the British colonial world. That history left a deep mark on Ipoh, the state capital, whose handsome colonial streetscapes, Chinese clan houses, and old-town coffee shops have earned it a reputation as one of Malaysia's most atmospheric mid-sized cities.
Ipoh grew wealthy on tin, and the legacy of that wealth is visible in the grandiose railway station, sometimes called the Taj Mahal of Ipoh, and in the shophouse terraces of the old town that line streets such as Jalan Panglima and the area around Concubine Lane. The Perak River, which gives the state much of its agricultural fertility, runs through the broader landscape, while the limestone hills that erupt from the surrounding plains shelter cave temples, notably Sam Poh Tong and Perak Tong, where Buddhist shrines occupy caverns worn into the rock over millennia. These are not reconstructed heritage sites but living places of worship that have drawn pilgrims for generations.
