Get up close to five biozones full of wildlife
The Paris Zoological Park, known locally as Zoo de Vincennes, houses over 3,000 animals representing 180 species from around the world. This modern conservation-focused zoo recreates five distinct ecosystems within the city limits, from African savannahs to Amazonian rainforests. Each biozone features spacious, naturalistic enclosures designed to promote animal welfare whilst providing visitors with an immersive wildlife experience.
You'll encounter lions prowling the Sahel-Sudan zone, zebras grazing on the African plain, and manatees swimming in tropical waters. The Great Greenhouse maintains authentic rainforest conditions, complete with free-flying birds and climbing primates. Madagascar's lemurs leap between branches whilst Patagonian sea lions dive and play in their aquatic habitat. The zoo's open layout and observation platforms offer panoramic views of giraffes, rhinos, and other large mammals roaming in environments that mirror their natural habitats.
The zoo operates year-round, though some outdoor areas may close during extreme weather conditions. Most visitors spend between two to four hours exploring all five biozones, depending on their pace and interest level. Arrive early in the morning when animals are most active, particularly during feeding times when zookeepers provide educational talks.
Located in Bois de Vincennes, the zoo is easily accessible by metro. Take Line 1 to Château de Vincennes station, then catch bus 46 to the zoo entrance. Alternatively, take Line 8 to Porte Dorée station. Paid parking is available nearby, but public transport is recommended. The zoo features wide, paved paths suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, with rental equipment available at the entrance.
While exploring Paris's eastern districts, consider visiting the nearby Château de Vincennes for a dose of medieval history after your wildlife adventure. For families seeking more Parisian attractions, Disneyland Paris offers another full-day experience just outside the city centre.
