The Palace Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 1564 Broadway, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 1,700 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1913.
The Palace Theatre opened in 1913, built by vaudeville mogul Martin Beck. Designed by Kirchhoff and Rose, the Palace quickly became the most prestigious vaudeville house in the United States. Playing the Palace was the ultimate achievement for vaudeville performers, and the expression 'playing the Palace' entered the American language as shorthand for reaching the top of one's profession.
The theater's history took a remarkable turn in the 2020s. As part of a major development project, the entire 1,913-ton building was raised 30 feet above Times Square using hydraulic jacks, rising approximately 7 inches per day. The lift, one of the most ambitious structural engineering feats in New York theater history, allowed retail space to be constructed beneath while the landmark building was preserved and renovated above.
Judy Garland's legendary 1967 concert run and Bette Midler's performances in the 1970s are among the Palace's most storied events. Broadway productions have included Sweet Charity, La Cage aux Folles, Disney's Aida, and the musical SpongeBob SquarePants.
The Palace Theatre has been completely renovated and hosts new Broadway productions.
