Din guide til Bodrum
Few places on the Turkish Aegean coast carry as much layered meaning as Bodrum. Built over the ruins of ancient Halicarnassus, the birthplace of Herodotus and the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the town has spent centuries accumulating identities: Crusader stronghold, fishing port, bohemian retreat, and, more recently, one of the most sought-after summer destinations in the eastern Mediterranean. The Bodrum Peninsula juts into the Aegean between the Gulf of Gökova to the south and the Gulf of Mandalya to the north, and that geography shapes almost everything about how the place feels and how visitors move through it.
The Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights of St John in the early fifteenth century from stones quarried directly from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, dominates the harbour and houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, one of the finest collections of its kind anywhere in the world. The mausoleum itself, though reduced to foundations and scattered fragments, remains a site of genuine historical weight, and a half-day walking tour of Halicarnassus traces the outline of what was once a city grand enough to give the word mausoleum to every language that followed. The old town spreads back from the waterfront in a tangle of whitewashed walls, bougainvillea, and narrow lanes that eventually open onto Kumbahçe Bay to the east and the main marina to the west.
