Your guide to Bucharest

Your guide to Bucharest tickets

Few European capitals carry their contradictions as openly as Bucharest. Grand Belle Époque boulevards run alongside concrete communist blocks; Orthodox churches sit in the shadows of brutalist ministries; and a city that was once called the Paris of the East has spent the decades since 1989 quietly, sometimes defiantly, reinventing itself. The result is a place with genuine texture, where the twentieth century left marks that no amount of renovation has fully smoothed away, and where that unresolved quality is precisely what makes it worth exploring.

The most overwhelming single fact about Bucharest is the Palace of Parliament, the second-largest administrative building in the world by floor area, commissioned by Nicolae Ceaușescu in the 1980s at enormous human and financial cost to the country. Guided tours of the palace, which appear prominently among the forty bookable experiences currently available in the city, give access to a sequence of marble halls and chandeliered reception rooms on a scale that defies easy description. The building is not beautiful in any conventional sense, but it is genuinely extraordinary, and no visit to Bucharest makes sense without confronting it directly. A short distance away, the Ceaușescu Mansion offers a different register of the same era: more intimate, more unsettling, the private residence of a regime rather than its public monument.
