That multicultural past left a distinct mark on the town's character, visible in the corrugated iron architecture of Chinatown, the Japanese Cemetery on Port Drive, and the particular mix of surnames and faces that still distinguishes Broome from other outback towns. The pearl industry never entirely disappeared either; cultured pearl operations continue in the region today, and the connection between Broome and the sea remains central to how the town understands itself.
